THE BOOKS

There are going to be three books in The Charlton Men trilogy - the first of which is already released. The second should be released in 2015. With a working title of 'The Greenwich Girls'', this is an extension of the first and just as suspense- filled, character-driven, and punctuated with unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Aside from this trilogy, other projects include intended publication of my PhD thesis, a Christmas book for children, and some free consultancy work with a couple of Irish writers who have very interesting projects in the pipeline.

‘The Charlton Men’, the first part of a trilogy set in South London, combines literary fiction with a love of football. Set in the historic surrounds of Greenwich and Charlton, the novel interweaves the rich heritage of the area’s past with contemporary themes of social disenfranchisement and a search for meaning.

Set in the aftermath of the 2011 London riots, the story follows two “Charlton Men” as their lives become intertwined with the fortunes of their local football club. Lance, a Londoner, has followed Charlton his whole life – from childhood right up until his return from Afghanistan, scarred by war and feeling abandoned after the sacrifices he has made for his country. Fergus, an Irishman, comes to London to get a fresh start on life and finds himself falling in love not once, but twice – first with the club and the riots, and second with a mysterious Marilyn Monroe lookalike whose darker side ripples beneath the surface. Conflict arises, however, when his friend Lance falls for the same woman and the two men find themselves pitted against one another as competitors for her affection.

THE GREENWICH GIRLS

(Forthcoming release)

This is the sequel to The Charlton Men - a work that takes the characters from the first book on journeys back and forwards from the city to the coast, through periods of light and dark. Woolwich features heavily in the story, with all its history of the Arsenal - the football team and the factories - both long gone from this side of the Thames where new stories, new histories are being written.

This work offers a flash of a few intense weeks within that history, and is a must read for all those who bought the previous work and new readers with an interest in London and literary fiction. Ah, there's humour too and some stormy satire - very appropriate for a general election year in the United Kingdom. All will be revealed in time.

Watch this space and I can promise this book is well worth waiting for.
